Iron Bottom Sound derived its name from the 200 odd ships and 690 aircraft that lie within it. Ships and aircraft from both Imperial Japanese forces and the American Allied Forces are represented. Unfortunately, most are too deep for sports diving – the Sound is on average 600 odd metres deep. Closer to both the shores of the Ngella Islands and to Guadalcanal, however, there are some of the worlds’ most spectacular wreck sites at diveable depths. These sites have been listed by location for ease of reference.
